Abstract Text:

Learn how universities and business have developed Zero Waste Plans and achieved Zero Waste. View Zero Waste planning approaches and how to design for reuse, recycling and composting collection. Understand how the GBCI Zero Waste Certification system is used to evaluate operations and to certify facilities as Zero Waste. Find policies, programs and facilities needed to achieve Zero Waste and resources to plan for Zero Waste, including a typical Scope of Work and Outline for Zero Waste Plans.

Gary Liss will highlight Zero Waste Planning approaches taken by universities and businesses.

Karyn Kaplan will highlight the "Zero Waste Campus Toolkit" she helped develop with the College and University Recycling Council. This shows how to pursue Zero Waste, includes Definitions, Zero Waste Campus Pledge, model Zero Waste Policy, Procedures, Strategies and Resources.

Lin King will suggest how architects and designers design for multi-material collection systems and how to use the USZWBC Scorecard to certify facilities on campus as Zero Waste.

Judi Gregory will highlight a new class "Zero Waste Planning for Business and Institutions", and how universities and businesses are complying with new Zero Waste requirements in Los Angeles.
Special Note: This session is 90 minutes and features a special extended Q&A in an Applied Learning Area on the show floor. Attendees will spend 60 minutes in this session and then will transition as a group to the show floor for continued discussion.

Learning Objectives:

Highlight universities and business that have planned for and achieved Zero Waste

Take different approaches to Zero Waste Planning including how architects and designers design for multi-material collection systems and space for recycling and composting containers in buildings and dining/cafes

Understand how the U.S. Zero Waste Business Council Zero Waste Facility Scorecard was used to evaluate current operations and is being used to certify facilities as Zero Waste.

Find policies, programs and facilities needed to achieve Zero Waste and Resources to plan for Zero Waste, including a typical Scope of Work and Outline for Zero Waste Plans.
