Wednesday, November 20 from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM | Booth L2023 « Back

Abstract Text:

Developed by the Green Building Council Italia, the GBC Historic Building (GBC HB) standard is designed to maintain architectural and historic integrity when restoring historic buildings. While addressing the recovery needs of these precious historical structures, this innovative standard simultaneously calls for sustainable practices designed to reduce energy use and environmental impact while preserving cultural heritage. In this session, attendees will learn about the GBC Historic Building rating system and its sustainability criteria designed specifically with historic refurbishment in mind. We’ll discuss how to preserve “historic value,” what is recognized as material witness having the force of civilization, encouraging high level of sustainability by taking advantage of the positive qualities of pre-industrial buildings.Honing in on the Materials and Resources and Indoor Environmental Quality criteria, we’ll consider how the selection of sustainable materials can help earn LEED v4 BD+C & ID+C credits toward certification. We’ll discuss the role of product selection in the overall sustainability of the building, environmental optimization of building products, regional materials and the use of low-emitting materials for Indoor Environmental Quality credits.
