EL26 - Interface Presents: How to Own Your Entire Carbon Footprint (Including the Supply Chain)

Thursday, November 21 from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM | Booth L623 « Back

Abstract Text:

This session brings together two progressive owner perspectives on approaching the embodied carbon of building materials as part of carbon reduction targets beyond operational energy.

Salesforce plans for all its new major office spaces established after 2020 to align with LEED Platinum v4 standards as the next step in the company’s sustainable built environment program. Salesforce also intends to pursue Net Zero Carbon Building certification through a focus on energy efficiency, impactful renewable energy procurement and the embodied carbon of building materials. Brightworks, Salesforce’s sustainability consultant, will join in how they’re helping Salesforce quantify and measure progress.

Interface, being a building material supplier itself, also recently completed its new HQ project in Atlanta and employed a strategy for embodied carbon reduction that was beyond their achieved LEED v4 Platinum certification. Consultant-partner JLL will share lessons learned in the process, as well as propose scaling options for the future.

Learning Objectives:

Be able to define embodied carbon and understand its impact on climate change.

Give examples of how embodied carbon reduction strategies can be employed at multiple scales.

Be aware of tools to help reduce overall embodied carbon of building projects.

Gain confidence and know where to find supporting information to have an embodied carbon conversation post-conference.
