B11 - Sustainability Beyond the Textbook: Partnerships with Green Mentors to Bring Schools to Life for Students

Abstract Text:

Center for Green Schools staff will moderate this session, bringing the Boston Latin School and School of Environmental Studies stories together and setting the context for the audience. The session will be focused on sharing two key perspectives from each project team – the student and the green building professional. The student and mentor from each school team will describe their roles and lessons learned, including the importance of keeping students at the center of the partnership; ways that local green building professionals can serve as a support to school operations team in utilizing Arc and pursuing LEED v4.1 O+M certification; as a support to teachers in classroom project design and implementation; and to expose students to the diversity of careers available in the green job sector. After learning about these experiences from the two schools, session participants will have the opportunity to outline how they might bring the Building Learners program and/or a student and mentor led LEED O+M certification program to schools near them. With examples of successful schools and a plan in hand, participants will be well on their way to supporting any school in their community to use student-collected data to drive decision-making and improve sustainability performance.

Identify opportunities for green building professionals to support k-12 schools in real-world green projects that reflect the actual sustainability performance of the schools.

Describe how Arc, LEED and Learning Lab are powerful tools for empowering schools toward continuous improvement.

Understand how to talk to schools about green building by articulating connections between the concept of green building benchmarking and student learning outcomes.

Articulate the ways that green building professionals can inform and support students interested in careers in sustainability.
