Abstract Text:

Buildings are a critical piece of an interconnected energy system and they play a critical role in decarbonization of the built environment. This session focuses on the practical application of distributed energy resources (DER - energy efficiency, load flexibility, energy storage, renewable energy generation, grid harmonization) to deliver cost and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions. The buildings industry has a significant opportunity to support effective grid management by designing and operating buildings that are an integrated piece of the energy system serving as beneficial grid resources. Speakers will discuss integration of DER in LEED v4.1. Presenters will share data on GHG emissions from energy, project case studies, simulation modeling results and insights from GridOptimal, a collaborative project of NBI and USGBC to develop metrics that measure and quantify building features and operating characteristics that support more integrated grid operation. Attendees will develop an understanding of how integration and optimization of renewables, storage and load management can deliver verifiable greenhouse gas emissions reductions beyond the project boundary and support the critical transformation within the energy sector required for grid-scale de-carbonization.
