TM08 - Game Changer: Green Sports in Atlanta

Monday, November 18 from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM | Meet at Tour Desk « Back

Abstract Text:

Green sports venues can leverage important environmental messages to fans worldwide and play a critical role in influencing the surrounding community. Join us for a tour of Atlanta's major sports venues - all newly constructed or renovated in the past 3 years - taking advantage of the unprecedented opportunity for city-wide leadership in green sports. Mercedes-Benz Stadium is the first pro-sports stadium in the U.S. to achieve LEED Platinum certification. The new world-class sports and entertainment venue is renowned for its bold design. However, the stadium’s unique sustainability solutions for water, lighting and energy conservation, as well as community programs and stewardship, have been a key part of the building’s innovation story from day one. SunTrust Park, home of the Atlanta Braves, is a LEED Silver-certified 41,000 seat ballpark. Initiatives implemented were extremely cost effective, impactful and repeatable. Attendees will also learn about how GSU Stadium (formerly Turner Field) has been repursposed in a sustainable way. In 2009, State Farm Arena became the first-ever existing NBA or NHL arena achieving LEED certification. The latest major renovation is on-track to achieve LEED Gold. The arena is continually finding new ways to manage and operate events with the lowest environmental impact possible.

Learning Objectives:

Compare strategies that encourage collaboration among diverse stakeholders to advance sustainable design initiatives in various sports

Discuss the impact of sports on communities and how they can leverage sustainability as a platform in the community or organization

Assess how sustainability initiatives can be cost effective for project teams through the examples of each facilities approach to sustainable design

Compare the strategies used with Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Sun Trust Park and State Farm Arena to engage the community in the use of the sustainable design features.
