TM05 - Mid-town ATL: A High Performance & Technology Hub

Monday, November 18 from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM | Level 4 Lobby « Back

Abstract Text:

Join us for a tour of three recent high-performance and innovative developments in Midtown Atlanta’s fast-growing technology hub. T3, for “timber, transit, technology,” is a new heavy timber building redefining the standard for the modern creative office. Located in the heart of the Atlantic Station, T3 is designed to combine a vintage industrial building with sustainability, connectivity and efficiency. It is an exposed wood structure with 11’ ceilings, extensive natural light, and large open floor plans for ultimate space planning flexibility. At the NCR Global HQ, a highly-collaborative design effort created a transformative work environment that positions NCR for the future. NCR is projecting a low EUI through low-pressure VAV systems, pre-treated outdoor air, on-site solar and staged chilled water systems. The project harvests millions of gallons of water with a cistern collection capacity of over 50,000 gallons. The CODA tower at Georgia Tech’s Technology Square is a 1 million sf office connected to an existing, historic structure designed in 1928. The project includes a passive heating and cooling system that is atypical for the Southeast, and incorporates heat recovery from the data center.

Learning Objectives:

Discuss the benefits and challenges of commercial timber construction

Examine the performance of passive heating and cooling strategies in the southeast

Analyze how smart building systems are successful in saving operational expenses and improving the workplace environment, health and well-being

Discuss how the projects have influenced the local design commission and additional development in the area
