TM01 - From Campus to Community: Spelman and Agnes Scott

Monday, November 18 from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM | Meet at Tour Desk « Back

Abstract Text:

This tour will take us on a walk through history into the future of student-led initiatives that go beyond the campus itself to advance social justice through sustainability. Two historic Atlanta-area women’s colleges, Agnes Scott and Spelman, are providing innovative hands-on learning opportunities to our next generation of global leaders.

Spelman College, the first Historically Black College & University to join USGBC with the first LEED-certified residence hall on an HBCU campus, has set an institutional example consisting of three kinds of sustainability -- environmental, personal, and communal. Agnes Scott College is ranked No. 1 among national liberal arts colleges on U.S. News & World Report’s “Most Innovative Schools” list for 2018. The campus includes five solar arrays and two geothermal fields along with forward-thinking renovations to their historic buildings which have earned multiple LEED certifications.

From Agnes Scott’s LEED Lab program to the interpretive mural at Spelman’s LEED Gold-certified Laura Spelman Hall, both campuses are engaging student leadership and drawing on their histories to advance environmental justice and carbon neutrality goals. These efforts are not parallel but in collaboration, as exemplified by both colleges’ roles in creating the Greater Atlanta RCE for implementing U.N. Sustainable Development Goals locally.

Learning Objectives:

Discuss how a college can provide an active learning connection with LEED buildings on campus by setting an institutional example

Compare financing mechanisms used on each campus to help meet carbon neutrality goals and fund innovative projects

Discuss service-based learning on college campuses, taking lessons learned from the campus to the community and beyond

Compare strategies for creating a climate for student engagement and leadership in sustainable initiatives
