Abstract Text:

Veterans Memorial School, Legacy Charter School, and Mansueto High School are new charter schools on Chicago’s south side that endeavor to foster sustainable values and community pride in an area dominated by inequality and divestment. Each achieving LEED certifications, and creating award winning architecture with challenging clients and tight budgets. No alcohol and no weapons allowed on campus.

Learning Objectives:

Navigate the challenges associated with adaptive reuse projects and how to transform an existing structure into a progressive learning environment.

Identify opportunities to integrate sustainability into a K-12 curriculum by using the building a teaching tool.

Explore strategies used to achieve high levels of performance and LEED certification on a tight budget.

Discuss progressive mechanical systems new to the Chicago and K-12 construction industry.
