There’s something for everyone on this tour as we visit three locations that demonstrate community engagement, performance and historic preservation. Tour attendees will visit the Institute of Cultural Affair’s GreenRise, a hub for community development, facilitation training and sustainability initiatives. It is home to 25 non-profits, serving 1,000 low-income and homeless persons weekly, two intentional residential communities, and an indoor urban-agriculture space. Innovative building upgrades of the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems are going beyond the typical approach to maximizing comfort (thermal, air quality, and lighting) while minimizing the energy needed as this building is determined to get as close to net-zero energy as possible. Attendees will also visit the LEED certified Center on Halsted was designed to enable Chicago’s wide array of LGBTQ originations come together. The three-story building houses a gymnasium, entertainment/theater, office space, public roof garden and grocery. The Center is known for its innovative rainwater capture and greywater reuse system, which supplies water non-potable applications. The tour will also visit the historic Charles Gates Dawes House, now the Evanston History Center. Come find out why a geothermal solution was selected and how it was implemented with minimal disturbance to the unbelievable interior architecture.
