Abstract Text:

In Chicago environmentally friendly environments are not just for humans! Come and learn how cats can teach us about solar energy concepts, by visiting two newer cat shelters in the city; Harmony House, a LEED Platinum, Net Zero Energy Shelter and the recently opened daylit TreeHouse Humane Society.

Learning Objectives:

Explore the requirements of achieving the platinum level of LEED and Net Zero Energy for this unique building type.

Observe how two different daylighting strategies were employed at each site, to reduce energy loads and increase the residents comfort and well being.

Learn how the trifecta* of renewable energy system were integrated as key components of achieving Net Zero in this climate.  (* geothermal wells, solar thermal panels, plus solar photovoltaics were all employed at Harmony House.)

Learn how passive solar strategies as demonstrated by the behavior of cats can drive building design decisions and educate visitors on the science of solar energy systems.
