Abstract Text:

Explore Chicago’s Chinatown neighborhood and tour two of the most sustainable municipal projects in the City, the Chicago Public Library’s LEED Gold Chinatown Branch and the Chicago Park District’s LEED Platinum Ping Tom Memorial Park Fieldhouse. Both sites feature design concepts highlighting Chinatown’s unique community needs.

Learning Objectives:

Articulate the importance of community engagement in designing a successful, welcoming, inclusive space that fulfills a need in the neighborhood.

Identify the building design strategies to highlight energy saving tactics and how the building site encourages pedestrian movement between the two distinct districts of a neighborhood.

Discuss opportunities for developing a holistic approach when designing programmatic adjacencies - open public facing spaces and closed/opaque programs.

Illustrate the design and deployment of the thermoactive cooling and heating system and how the system operates during the summer, winter and shoulder seasons.
