Abstract Text:

Chiaravalle Montessori School and Galewood Elementary School are unique buildings in unique communities with similar missions, transform a community with an exception education inside an exceptional space. Chiaravalle transformed an existing 1898 building with an addition and renovation, while Galewood/UNO created a new landmark in an underserved community. No alcohol and no weapons allowed on campus.

Learning Objectives:

Explore the architectural discovery process and how the design teams aligned the school’s and community’s phosphides with the design of the project.

Summarize how project design goals transformed into sustainability goals and LEED certified projects.

Describe how residents have integrated these projects into the community and how the community has been impacted as a result.

Identify active and passive sustainable design strategies implemented on the projects like shading and photovoltaic systems.
