Abstract Text:

As part of the first Department of Energy grants for smart grid, Illinois Institute of Technology developed the "Perfect Power at IIT" plan. This tour will cover the IIT micro (smart) grid along with the Ed Kaplan Family Institute for Innovation and Tech Entrepreneurship and S. R. Crown Hall.

Learning Objectives:

Differentiate a smartgrid (microgrid) from traditional electrical infrastructure.

Explain how renewable energy and battery storage work cooperatively in microgrid and the impact of electric vehicle charging on the grid.

Describe how smartgrid/microgrid infrastructure can affect planning and building design decisions.

Identify opportunities for technologies such as dynamic operable fa├žades and radiant cooling and heating to benefit design.
