Michael Hoffman was named Senior Advisor to the Governor of the State of Illinois in March 2018. In this role, he advises the Governor on a variety of interagency operational and logistical matters. Mike served as Acting Director of the Illinois Department of Central Management Services (CMS) from 2016 to 2018. In this role, Mike served as the Chief Administrator for the State of Illinois. CMS handles personnel and labor relations matters, property management, benefits administration, and fleet services for the State of Illinois. Prior to his appointment at CMS, Mike served as Chief Operating Officer for the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. In this role, Mike ran the daily operations of the department, developed department strategy, and managed the department’s organizational change efforts. Before beginning his service with the state, Mike worked at RockTenn (now WestRock), a Fortune 500 manufacturer of consumer and corrugated packaging. Mike served in RockTenn’s Lean Six Sigma division, acting as the direct conduit between tactical/operational and strategic initiatives in the organization. Most of Mike’s professional career was spent as a commissioned Infantry officer in the U.S. Marine Corps. In his over 15 years of service, Mike served in a variety of high-profile command and leadership roles. During this tumultuous period in our nation’s history, Mike led several critical organizational change efforts for our military, including a major transformation effort immediately following the September 11 attacks. Mike also led transformations and turnarounds of various military organizations ranging from 40-1200 members, often in very challenging environments. During his service to his country, Mike deployed overseas six times, including a combat tour in Iraq and two combat tours in Afghanistan. Mike was awarded the Bronze Star Medal twice, once for valor, for actions he performed in Afghanistan.
